Jane Austen is without question, one of England's most enduring and skilled novelists. With her wit, social precision, and unerring ability to create some of literature's most charismatic and believable heroines, she mesmerises her readers as much today as when her novels were first published. Jane Austen is without question, one of England's most enduring and skilled novelists. With her wit, social precision, and unerring ability to create some of literature's most charismatic and believable heroines, she mesmerises her readers as much today as when her novels were first published. Whether it is her sharp, ironic gaze at the Gothic genre invoked by the adventures of Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey; the diffident and much put-upon Fanny Price struggling to cope with her emotions in Mansfield Park; her delightfully paced comedy of manners and the machinations of the sisters Elinor and Marianne in Sense and Sensibility; the quiet strength of Anne Elliot in Persuasion succeeding in a world designed to subjugate her very existence; and Emma - 'a heroine whom no one but myself will like' teased Austen - yet another irresistible character on fire with imagination and foresight. Indeed not unlike her renowned creator. Jane Austen is as sure-footed in her steps through society's whirlpools of convention and prosaic mores as she is in her sometimes restrained but ever precise and enduring prose.

First of all, the cover of the book has Keira Knightley on it which is not very much appreciated. This aside, the book is totally worth the price. The only disadvantage in my opinion is that obviously it is a very thick book and thus not very confortable to be hold while you read it. But Jane Austen always offers great reading pleasure, so I suppose this disadvantage is not really a big one...

Jane Austen was one of the few women of her time to write about life in early 19th-century England. She was the second daughter of a country parson, and her numerous brothers introduced her to the worlds of banking, gentlemen farmers, and naval officers. Wordier than today's popular novels, Austen is subtle and sparkling in her incisive illustration of her own social order. I find her characters as amusing as Dickens', but rather more shaded than the army of people he gives us. Though Austen writes about a society whose rules may be unfamiliar to us, her characters' emotions shine through clearly and resonate with our present society. My copy stands in plain view for easy reference, and I have read each of her novels many times. Reading Austen will also boost your vocabulary!
