Rarely can the day-to-day happenings in any home have been as closely described as those of Thomas Carlyle and his wife Jane, in their writings. Their domestic life deserved special study and the author has produced an entertaining and instructive contribution to Victorian social history. The reader is able to share the Carlyle's food, sanitary and clothing problems, monetary difficulties, pleasure in the garden and household dogs and birds; and to sympathize with them in the incursions of the builders, the crowing cocks and piano playing children of the neighbours, and a long succession of trying servants (the appendix lists servants employed by the Carlyles during Mrs Carlyle's lifetime).

This is a close study of the London Victorian household of the historian Thomas Carlyle and his wife Jane, who wrote tons of letters on which the book is based. It describes details of daily life at home and the various domestic dramas and frets they entailed. Jane Carlyle, who is quoted richly throughout, was a marvelous writer--frank, educated, opinionated, articulate, caustic, poignant, and witty. Her tales of the many domestic servants she wore out in her service illuminate the complicated dynamics that must have gone on in most middle class Victorian households between a mistress and her hired help. Also fascinating are the sometimes fraught dynamics between the Carlyles themselves, Jane's strange mental processes regarding pets, and other similar stuff.
