While Boulle's novel is very (very!) loosely based on the true World War II events of the building and destruction of the River Kwai Bridge, it is still entertaining. Read the novel and then read the true story: "The Colonel of Tamarkan. Philip Toosey and the Bridge on the River Kwai" by Julie Summers. Toosey was a real hero and his fictional counterpart is almost insulting when you see the difference between fact and fiction. That's why fiction based on fact is usually a dangerous medium for writers to dabble in. It's lazy writing in this reviewer's opinion..
