This is a great fairy tale that kids love. It also has many principles to discuss with young readers. Hans, the hero is seen as "different" in his community, so he leaves to seek his fortune and save his father from constant ridicule. The story also invites discussion of bravery, greed, and mutability--the idea that time must continue to pass. And the illustrations are absolutely captivating. When I first read this book to my children I wondered why Mercer Mayer wasted his talent on "Little Critter." Highly recommended.
