Fair. No Jacket. 268pp. Original half leather (black morocco over gray cloth). All edges gilt, spine lettering and decoration stamped in gilt. Illustrated with striking engravings depicting both the architecture and the decorations of the Palace. Includes the uncommon folding color plate. The importance of the Crystal Palace in the life of Charles Spurgeon, the great Victorian era preacher, is indisputable. Charles and Susannah had season tickets to the Palace and they met there often while they were courting. They actually began their courtship there when the palace opened in Sydenham Hill. Spurgeon also preached to the biggest crowd of his life there: 24, 000 on a day of national fasting. The boards and text block are dampstained. Both joints split but boards still intact. Corners rubbed through at the tips. Folding plate starting at the fold. Size: 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall.
