Scrapping the original series' limited "five-year mission" for a more ambitious ongoing one, Star Trek: The Next Generation aims high from its first episode. The Enterprise D is captained by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), a leader more reserved and thought-driven than the beloved Captain Kirk. Other notable crew members include Klingon lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn), security chief Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby), android Data (Brent Spiner), empathic ship's counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), first officer Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) VISOR-wearing lieutenant Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Chief Medical Officer Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and her genius son Wesley (Wil Wheaton). Though the season features plenty of callbacks to its predecessor - an appearance from DeForest Kelley as "Bones" McCoy, a return of Romulans in the season finale, and an episode-long homage to the original series episode The Naked Time - Star Trek: The Next Generation also offers a number of its own inventions. The two-part premiere, "Encounter at Far Point, introduces audiences to the popular character of Q (John DeLancie), who returns in Hide and Q and other episodes throughout the series. The season also introduces audiences to family members of the crew, including Data's brother Lore (also played by Spiner) and Deanna Troi's mother Lwaxana (Majel Barrett, the wife of series creator Gene Roddenberry and the voice of the ship's computer). An attempt to turn the aurally gifted Ferengi into the Federation's new nemesis might have failed in The Last Outpost and The Battle, but an innovative danger was presented in the addition of the holodeck in The Big Goodbye. The first season featured guest appearances from the Mamas and the Papas singer Michelle Phillips, genre favorite Michael Berryman, and future Deep Space Nine star Armin Shimmerman.
