Salmon are known and celebrated around the world for food and sport. Chinook, called the King because it is the largest, is a Pacific Ocean breed. The author follows a female salmon from beginning to end of the fish's life, examining its biology and environment as she chronicles its descent from its natal Salmon River to the Pacific Ocean. After several years at sea, due to a homing instinct, the fish returns to spawn in the same river and spot where her life began, and then to die.
