Told in roughly 5, 900 verses, largely in ten-syllable, free verse lines and including numerous inset folksongs, this epic poem chronicles the passage of the famous Donner Party from its beginnings in Illinois to its tragic end near Truckee, California. Inscribed by Altrocchi on the half-title. From the James S. Copley Library, with the San Diego newspaper publisher and philanthropist's bookplate to the front pastedown. Octavo. Original cloth binding, with black titles. Two excerpts from George R. Stewart's Ordeal by Hunger, one written on a sheet of lined paper and tipped in, appear on a concluding blank leaf. Some offsetting from laid in newspaper clippings (still present) to the verso of the fronf flyleaf, with an ink inscription to the recto. Unobtrusive evidence of an old mylar cover to the corners of the pastedowns. Minor wear to the corners and tips. The dust jacket is price-clipped, with some mild edgewear and a small tape repair to the verso. A very good copy. Inscribed by Author.
