Newspaper sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) draws on her own experiences and those of her friends, in particular cynical Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), hedonistic Samantha (Kim Cattrall), and prudish Charlotte (Kristin Davis), to document the highs, lows and woes of dating. The series opens with Carrie vowing to stop searching for Mr. Right and instead make do (and love) with Mr. Right Now. But her plan to stay emotionally detached soon falls by the wayside when she meets the elusive Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who comes in and out of Carrie's life as she has dalliances with a model, a much-younger guy, and a Frenchman who leaves her a $1000 "tip" in the morning. Miranda, meanwhile, goes out with a "modelizer" and later becomes involved with a sensitive nerd named Skipper (Ben Weber). Samantha goes to extremes, as usual -- from having her sexual encounter with a model videotaped to shacking up with a man of extremely small stature, and later giving up sex all together.
