Being a student of historical gnosticism, and interested in general in the history of ideas I couldn't resist this title when I came across it. I have never been one greatly into movies so I just wanted to see how the ideas I am so greatly interested in would have found expression in contemporary culture. The book was a revelation. It is a study of three different but related threads in contemporary film - gnostic, alchemical and kabbalistic. It looks at some fifty or so films, some in considerable depth and picks out with tremendous insight the author's understanding of these particular motifs. I read the book in one day, and have as a result ordered nearly all the films the author discusses. It has helped my study of gnosticism, which was in danger of becoming something of a dry academic pursuit into something vibrant and living and with contemporary relevance, not to mention fun, and also initiated me into some of the deeper currents moving through a medium I had neglected. Not so anymore! What is urgently needed now is some kind of updated second edition, as the last released film the book discusses would be I think in the year 2001.
