I've read several books on this topic, and this one is the best. It's easy to read and understand. The main points are supported by documentation or examples. Plus, there simple exercises to emphasis what he's teaching. It gives you the why behind the importance of each element. And it's done in a fun way by a movie insider.
Finally, I would say the instructions could easily be applied to short stories or novels with positive results. There is a universal truth affixed to these story telling tenets that is profound and useful to all writers.

A must have for aspiring Screenwriters
This is a great tool! I was in the dark about writing screenplays but now, thanks to Blake Snyder, I am on my way to success. Do not write you next screenplay before reading his book.
