As New. Printed wrappers, 4to, 30 cm, various paginations. A volume from Renaissance Latin Drama in England: Second Series, in which the Latin texts are facsimile productions of printed or manuscript versions of the plays. Each volume includes in addition to the facsimile text a short series preface with a general bibliography, and an introduction to each play and its author which comprises a short biography of the author, a history of the text and its performance, a detailed summary of the play and a bibliography particular to the play. Contents: Introduction by Hans-Jürgen Weckermann; Naufragium ioculare, by Abraham Cowley, facsimile reprint of edition originally published: London: Seile, 1638; Valetudinarium, by William Johnson, facsimile of a manuscript in Emmanuel College, Cambridge (MS 52, formerly 1.2.32). "Cowley's Latin comedy, Naufragium Ioculare, was performed on 2 February 1638 at Trinity College..."Johnson's Valetudinarium has come down to us in three Cambridge manuscripts: St. John's College MS. S.59, University Library MS. Dd.3.73, and Emmanuel College MS. 52 (formerly 1.2.32), which serves as the copy of the present facsimile. The title-page of the Emmanuel manuscript gives 6 February 1637/8 as the date of the first and probably only performance of the play...Since the scene is set at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, the 'hospital' of the title, diseases, whether referring to physical, psychic or mental illnesses, dominate the atmosphere of the play."
