It's the 1970s, and after her brother's death in Vietnam Leslie can't wait to leave her pokey upstate New York town and her annoyingly wacky family that includes a gun-nut father and alcoholic mother. She takes off for New York at 18, gets a job, loses her virginity, almost joins the women's movement, and then travels on, to an ashram in India, where she learns what she wants from life and returns home chastened.
