The Mediomatrici were settled along the Moselle, near where now stands the city of Metz; and beyond them, on the Rhine, in what is now the Swiss canton of Basle, were the Raurici. A nation beyond the Hercynian Mountains, known as the Borohemum, and in modern times as Bohemia, were close by the Quadii, whose territory, now called Moravia, touched the Danube on its southern part. These tribes, with the Marcomanni and some smaller clans, were comprehended under the general name of Suevi, which people subsequently forced their way into Spain, and established themselves there as an independent and warlike nation. The Suevi were a powerful people, who spread themselves widely. Among their possessions must be reckoned Saxony, Brandenburg, Lusatia, and Silesia. In the interior of Germany, the Cimbri and the Saxons occupied the country north of the Elbe; while on the south side of that stream the Chanci were the masters of the country through which the Weser flows. They were near to the two smaller tribes of the Cherusci and Chamavi. Such are the best accounts which can be collected from Caesar, Tacitus, and Ptolemy, respecting the various tribes which inhabited Germany before the period of intercourse between them and the Romans. Modern nations are fixed and permanent societies, connected amongst themselves by laws and government, and bound to their native soil by arts and agriculture. But the German tribes were only voluntary and fluctuating associations of soldiers, --they were almost savages; and the same territory often changed hands in the course of conquest or of emigration.
