The day I found this book, I had no idea what I was looking for. I was at my local library and had already found the books I needed when I began to wander aimlessly looking for 'one more book'. Somehow, I came across this book and began to flip through the pages. I don't remember what I had seen exactly, but it was enough to take this book home with me that day.
I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it! The book is written more like a journal, and the writer did an excellent job pulling readers into the past. I felt as though I was there...exploring uncharted parts of south Florida...talking to the barefoot postman, checking on the cabins along the coast, and watching the area become populated with more and more families. I love history, well, the thought of history! I have a hard time keeping my focus on the subject matter when it's as stale as week old bread. This book, well, it's a hot baked loaf smothered in butter! Fresh.
This book is worth a read for anybody who has ever wondered about pioneers that first moved to Florida. Children and adults alike! After returning the book to the library, I purchased a copy for myself (and my family). Many nights my children have asked me to read from THIS book instead of the standard bedtime story. If you have lived or live in Florida...this book will take you back into time before concrete jungles took over!
