This was such an unusual premise that I was hooked immediately. And the story never disappointed.

Slow start
At first I thought this was a true story, but as I got into it I realized it was like a James Michener novel. Part fantasy and part fact.. I couldn't put it down. I loved the way the author {a man} wrote as a woman as she told her story of going west with 1000 white woman to gain freedom and do service for the country by marrying into a Native Indian tribe to bring the country together. She volunteered, as earlier in her life she had been place in an insane asylum by her family and this was a way out. I found lots of laughs and humor in the story as the author wrote as a woman. The story has quite a bit of history entwined in the plot which is what I liked. The ending did not turn out as I expected. Great book, couldn't put it down. As a matter of fact my friend says the same thing as she is reading it now. She say she is reading it slow as she doesn't want it to end.

Excellent historical novel on the American West
This historical novel is so well written that I practically have to pinch myself to remember I am not reading May Dodd's diary. It is a fascinating story. A fiction with a solid basis in history. The cultural gulf between the Cheyenne and the encroaching whites is illustrated clearly by the white women's experience joining the tribe through marriage. There is plenty of drama in the book with intertribal conflict, love, prejudice, joy and hardship.

Gripping
Very interesting book, fast-paced and realistic. It felt so real that I was grouchy at the end that it really was made-up!

An Absolute Must Read!!!
Beautifully written story, takes you right into the plot and you become part of the story. Amazing historical fiction that brings the characters to life. The main character was a great story teller and used the description of the country and events to make it so real. I could not put it down. Recommended to all book clubs.
