Nat Love, a former slave, was born in 1854 and left home at age fifteen to become a cowboy. Known for his expert shooting and roping as a cattle herder, he survived getting captured by Native Americans and being stranded in a blizzard. He eventually became a Pullman porter for the country's growing railroad industry and published an autobiography.
