I just finished Dennis Britten's book, Men Shake Hands, and I highly recommend you get a copy and read this delightful story of a boy growing up in Portland, Or in the 1950s-60s. It is charming, touching, and so appealingly chronicles the maturation of a boy who faces family disruptions in addition to struggling with not being a "guy-guy" in a world where every boy was expected to excel in sports and manliness. Dennis was different; he was sensitive and fanciful, and very talented musically. Dennis skillfully portrays the boy's thoughts and feelings, observations, and experiences in the simple language of a child, but very successfully conveys the joys and sorrows of growing up different.
