Author Hilaire Belloc(France 1870-1953 Great Britain) wrote of Matilda the child, and her satiric tale; she was "a casualty of Victorian morality" (from jacket flap). Children's book author and illustrator of great delight and comic detail, Steven Kellogg, adapted Belloc's Gothic poem earlier published in 1941. Matilda is a child of 8 years in a large art-bedecked Victorian home in the days of horse-drawn fire-fighting water tanks and telephones and a maiden aunt intolerant of lies. Reporting falsely of a fire at her home, she took great delight in the chaos and water damage that followed. Punished by being kept home from the theatre, Matilda found herself in real trouble when fire broke out that evening from a fireplace. Matilda screamed and shouted from upstairs windows. "Fire! Fire! " and passing folks on the city street below returned, "Liar! Liar! " Hence, Matilda and her home were lost, and she is recalled as "the timeless sister of the boy who cried wolf", (from jacket).
