The music on this release is not all by Italian Renaissance composer Marco Antonio Cavazzoni; some pieces are by his son Girolamo, and others by their contemporaries. Nor does it consist entirely of ricercars. Harpsichordist Glen Wilson does well to contrast the ricercar (the direct ancestor to the fugue, and still cultivated by Bach a century and a half later) with adaptations of vocal pieces.
