This book is well researched and well written. It goes into the history of mapmaking --from when the earth was flat to modern aerial mapping. Easy to read though thorough in all the aspects of mapping the world.

Like Wine: Excellent But Dry
The facts are all there, and the descriptions, but the writing lacks a certain body or flow. Stick with it, though; it's too full of information to abandon just because it's a bit dry.
