The hand is cold that wrote the foregoing pav, and it devolves upon another to record the su. .sequent events. Before daybreak, on the 6th of March, the Alamo was assaulted by the whole force of the Mexican army, commanded by Santa Anna in person. The battle was desperate until daylight, when only six men belonging to the Texan garrison were found alive. They were instantly surrounded, and ordered by General Castrillon to surrender, which they did, under a promise of his protection, finding that resistance any longer would be madness. Colonel Crockett was of the number. He stood alone in an angle of the fort, the barrel of his shattered rifle in his right hand, in his left his huge bowie-knife dripping blood. There was a frightful gash across his forehead, while around him there was a complete barrier of about twenty Mexicans, lying pell-mell, dead, and dying. At his feet lay the dead body of that well-known character, designated in the Colonel's narrative by the assumed name of Thimblerig, his knife driven to the haft in the throat of a Mexican, and his left hand clenched in his hair. VG. Good Jacket. 8vo-over 7¾"-10" Tall. A neat old vintage copy in a jacket that looks good because of new mylar cover. -was part of the "famous storeis for young people: series." Still, it is written in Crockett's word at a higher level than usually expected in a childresn series. Scarce. One of the neatest crockett books still today.
Good. No Jacket. Book Seller # HA231, 5.25 inches by 7.6 inches, 405 pages. Definite wear to the exterior worst along the edges at the corners and at the top and bottom of the spine. There is a gift inscripton dated 1884 on the blank. Both the front and back hinges have been reinforced with white linen tape with acid free adhesive. Nothing is loose in th text block and the interior pages are clean. NOT an Ex-Library copy. Good. No Dust Jacket. Brown cloth covered boards, gilt title on spine, b/w internal illustrations, 405 pages. Undated copy probably dates from the latter quarter of the 19th century. Boards worn along edges with fraying at head of spine, lower corners missing some of the underlying boards, spine sprinkled with spotty wear with 4 open tears, front end papers cracking along hinge-hinge still tight, previous owner's name on front paste down, page edges soiled, text pages age toned & have marginal smudges & soiling.
