L'Amour takes us to Siberia where an American Airforce pilot in being held in a secret prison. His radio was jammed, and his airplane, a new plane he was testing, was forced down on the sea. He is thought lost at sea. But the Amerian pilot is not just a pilot, he is also part Sioux indian, and grew up in the wilds of Idaho. His name is Joe Makatozi, "Joe Mack" to his friends. Joe excapes frm the prison before he can be interrogated, and heads for the Bering Sea where his ancestors crossed (on land) to reach the America's. The story is about the chase, and Joe's survival techniques in 50 below zero weather. It will keep you in suspense to the end.
