From the Foreword: The Association for Modern Psychoanalysis was born in Florida in January of 1987. Present during labor were members of the large family of modern psychoanalysts. That was as it should be, for we think of ourselves as a family in which diversities are welcomed and similarities treasured. On that occasion Dr. Spotnitz sent us this message: An association that is dedicated to the principles of uniting and providing a common ground for those engaged in the study of the treatment of problems of human behavior which can foster research, clinical practice, theory, and spread training opportunities to greater numbers, has my full support and interest. It is to attain those purposes that we came together, and stay together. Therefore, it was most fitting that the first accomplishment of our organization, a conference honoring Hyman Spotnitz on his eightieth birthday, was on the subject of the family. Our second accomplishment, -linked to the first, is this Festschrift; as its pages will attest, it is an expression of deeply felt gratitude towards the man who has given so richly to so many. Dr. Spotnitz-as brilliant practitioner, creative scientific thinker, distinguished author and educator and founder and patriarch of Modern Psychoanalysis-has earned our honor, admiration and respect. As a warm, caring, witty and humorous man, he has evoked our affection and our love. Phyllis F. Cohen President, AMP September, 1989.
