My first concern was for the Index that had cost me so much toil, and it was packed away in cases in the cellar, later to be followed by all my other papers and books. When in May 1941 the enemy got closer to us, and two bombs actually fell so near the house that only half of it remained habitable, the occupants were also in the cellar and received no more physical damage than did the precious contents of my packing -cases.
