[From Introduction] This book is the outcome of a session spent browsing through a picture library in search for material to illustrate a book about world religions. As we discovered photographs of primitive peoples resplendent in their ritual adornments we were immediately reminded of contemporary punk portraits which increasingly leer at us from newspapers and magazines. Val Hennessy, well-known Fleet Street columnist, recently presented a series of programmes for ATV. Described by one critic as (a chaotic disaster' and by another as "a triumph of originality' the experimental programmes were received with enthusiasm or distaste by viewers as each week the ratings soared. One programme entitled 'Punk and Acne Go Together' caught our attention as it encapsulated the anger, the hilarity and the pathos of punk. We invited Val Hennessy to describe for us her TV encounter with these punk fans. Michael Haines searched out what we consider to be the very best of the punk press photographs and the most interesting ofthe primitivepictures. Combined, the material evolved into a book which offers a visual celebration of the most bizarre phenomenon of this decade.
