Bernard Fall's "Hell in a Very Small Place" is possibly the best history on the Battle of Dien Bien Phu written. His detail is supurb and the writing style makesw it a fun and exciting read. The special part of the book is that he does not leave out the Viet Minh and often throws in details from their side, including names. He seems to know every soldier in the garrison by name and the reader quickly developes a rapor with them. There is no better book out there containing his kind of detail and easy writing style.

Excellnet historical narrative ...
Bernard Fall gives an insightful account of the battle of Dien Bien Phu from the perspective of someone who had been familiar with the IndoChina situation on a very personal basis. Fall includes a heavy input from survivors of the battle, although mostly, of course from the French side. The book includes as much information as could be expected in 1964 when Fall published this work.
