166 pages. Softcover. Good condition. UNITED STATES CIVIL WAR. The turning point of the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg, marked the defeat of Robert E. Lee's attempt to invade Pennsylvania and reach Washington, D.C. It was fought between July 1st and 3rd, 1863, and took 20, 451 Confederate and 23, 003 Union lives. It is arguably the most famous battle in American history and the literature of the battle is enormous. General histories of the Civil War devote many pages to the analysis of its strategies and outcome, and many single volumes describe each maneuver, however small, in great detail. Although such works are invaluable to the historian and student of the battle, they are not helpful to the the average visitor to the battle gield who wants a description of the battle in general terms, a selectioin of the most dramatic incidents, and an account of the extensive cemetery and park. W. C. Storrick's classic book satisfies all of these requirements. (Key Words: Battle of Gettysburg, W. C. Storrick, Pennsylvania, United States Civil War, Military, Army of the Potomac, Army of Northern Virginia, George G. Meade, Generals, Pickett's Charge).
