The Big Little Books, were first created in 1932 by Sam Lowe for Whitman Publishing Co. The name, though seemly paradoxical, promised "the buyer a great amount of reading material and pleasure (BIG) within a small and compact (LITTLE) book."-Lower, Larry. Lowery's The Collector's Guide to Big Little Books and Similar Books. Educational Research and Applications Corporation, 1981, p. 2. They were typically 3 5/8" wide and 4 1/2" high and featured a dramatic color cover. They featured an illustration on one page opposite a page of text. During the "Golden Age" of Big Little Books (1932-1938) these books were a staple for many American children.
