A beautifully illustrated true account of the progress of a litter of terrier puppies intentionally half bred and reared during the post war days of austerity. Michael Lyne's love of all hounds that hunt by scent or sight has dominated his life and art. A quote from "THE TATLER" reviewing an exhibition reads: "FEW WILL DISPUTE THAT MICHAEL LYNE IS THE GREATEST LIVING SPORTING ARTIST. MANY CONSIDER THAT HE RANKS, AMONG THE GREATEST PAINTERS IN THIS FIELD IN THE WHOLE LONG AND BRILLIANT HISTORY OF ENGLISH SPORTING ART. STUBBS APART, THERE IS NO ANIMAL PAINTER OF THE LAST THREE CENTURIES WITH WHOM LYNE CANNOT FAVOURABLY BE COMPARED." Michael's introduction: ONCE I HAD A SMALL DOG WHO POSSESSED ALL THE VIRTUES WHICH I LOOK FOR IN THE CANINE RACE. HER NAME WAS CONSTANT, AND HER FATHER BONZO WAS A SMALL SEALYHAM OF GREAT CHARACTER, WHILE HER MOTHER CAUTIOUS WAS A 14" BEAGLE WITH UNDOUBTED CHARM AND A VOICE LIKE A LITTLE BELL. CONSTANT, ALTHOUGH ONLY 12" HIGH AT THE SHOULDER, RAN WITH MY BEAGLES AND, AT THE END OF ONE GOOD HUNT WAS THE LEADING HOUND WHEN THE PACK PULLED DOWN ITS FIRST HARE. FROM NOW ON SHE WAS CONSIDERED SOMETHING OF A PERSONALITY AND HER VIRTUES INCREASED SO THAT FINALLY WHEN SHE WAS PUT DOWN AT THE AGE OF 14, I REALIZED WITH REGRET THAT FOR ME THE PERFECT DOG HAD MATERIALISED, SPENT HER LITTLE LIFE AND GONE; -I WOULD NEVER EXPERIENCE ANOTHER FOR THEY SAY, -A MAN IN HIS LIFETIME FINDS ONLY ONE IDEAL WOMAN, HORSE AND DOG. THE SKETCHES IN THIS BOOK ARE OF A LITTER OF PUPPIES WHICH, IN AN OPTIMISTIC MOMENT, WERE PLANNED IN THE HOPE THAT ONE OF THEM MIGHT HAVE MANY OF THE VIRTUES CONSTANT POSSESSED. A VAIN HOPE, AS ANYONE WHO HAS EXPERIMENTED IN CROSS-BREEDING WILL AT ONCE REALIZE. NO DECENDANTS OF MY SEALYHAM FAMILY REMAINED AFTER THE WAR, SO A TERRIER PUPPY WITH SEALYHAM BLOOD IN HER WAS PURCHASED AND IN DUE COURSE WAS MATED TO A BEAGLE. WHEN THE PUPPIES WERE BORN THE IDEA OF AN ILLUSTRATED "PROGRESS" BOOK OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT OCCURRED TO ME AND SO, A SKETCH BOOK AND PENCIL ADDED TO THE USUAL FEEDING UTENSILS AND ODDMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE REARING OF PUPPIES, WAS KEPT IN THE STABLE WHERE THE LITTER WAS REARED. THE "PROGRESS" BOOK OF A FIRST CHILD IS USUALLY WELL KEPT FOR THE FIRST FEW YEARS. IN THE CASE OF MY OWN CHILDREN THE PAGES ARE BLANK AFTER QUITE A FEW YEARS, SO THAT, TAKING THE COMPARATIVE AGES OF MAN AND DOG, THE RECORD OF THESE PUPPIES IS CARRIED WELL ON INTO MIDDLE AGE, A DISTINCTION USUALLY AFFORDED BIOGRAPHICALLY TO CELBRITIES.
