Seton Lloyd was trained as an architect at the Architectural Association in London, and, after qualifying, served for two years as assistant to the late Sir Edwin Lutyens. His first archaeological experience came in 1929 as a member of the Egypt Exploration Society's expedition to Tell-el-Amarnah. Encouraged to a change of profession by the friendship and teaching of the late Professor H. Frankfort, he assisted the latter for seven years as field-supervisor to the Iraq Expedition of the Chicago Oriental Institute, and shared in its memorable finds at Tell Asmar, Tell Agrab, and Khafajah. Two subsequent years were spent with Professor Garstang, excavating a prehistoric mound at Mersin in south Turkey. But in 1939 he returned to Iraq with the appointment of Technical Adviser to the Directorate of Antiquities. With an interval for war-work in Palestine, he remained in Baghdad for ten further years, during which the first large-scale excavations at Sumerian and prehistoric sites were financed by the Iraq Government and staffed by its own scientists. The results, for instance at ancient Eridu and Hassuna, are now universally known. In 1949 he became Director of the newly founded British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara and has since conducted excavations at Polatli, Sultantepe, and Beyce-sultan. He has been a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries since 1938 and was given the Honorary Degree of M.A. by the University of Edinburgh in 1953. keywords: 42422. inventory # 42605. FROM THE PUBLISHER-This is the story of archaeological exploration in Mesopotamia. Skillfully knitted together into a single narrative are the lives and accomplishments of the great pioneer Assyriologists, Rich, Rawlinson, Layard, and many other explorers of the last century. The epic of discovery thus created is extended to include the excavations of more recent times, and brings the thread of historical research down to the present day. It presents a picture of many great personalities, both British and foreign, in which the courage and perseverance of the early adventurers is matched by the patient ingenuity of their successors m a less hazardous age.
