This book is a sweet new addition to Ms. Lackey's Five Hundred Kingdoms retellings of old fairytales. Drawing on an unusual combination of several tales (the Arabic genie, Russian Rusalki and Baba Yaga, Oceanic mermaids), she weaves a light, engaging story that, though slow in times, is a very enjoyable read. The book follows the adventures of Katya, the daughter of the Sea King and his most valuable spy, as she explores the kingdoms of the Dry Land for her father. While there, she meets and falls in love with a DryLander Prince, Sasha. Before their relationship can blossom very far, though, she is captured by an evil Jinn and must use all her wits - and a little bit of the Tradition - to free herself and the other magical maidens he has taken captive. Lucky for her, she has the Luck of the Fortunate Fool on her side!
The best aspect of the book is, as usual, the author's wonderful way with words. Her descriptions of landscapes and characters never fail to delight me. The best examples are definitely her descriptions of the Sea Palace and of Baba Yaga's horrible home! I can't help but envy her wonderful imagination!
