This is a monthly selection of www.HoustonBookClub.com on the topic of "the Sky." The book is a collection of anecdotes replete with wonderful people, and an obvious love of flying and the men in the early industry, from mechanics to entrepreneurs, but above all, the pilots.
What rating a reader gives may just be a matter of taste. I find that memoirs are just not that fascinating to me, but the book was well written, although my eyes glaze over with all the technical minutiae.

A great book by a great author
The best book ever written on the realities of flying. Gann takes you up close and personal as he flys around the world during the second world war. Every chapter is filled with fascinating people and great adventure. Also highly recommended are "Song of the Sirens" about his sailing adventures that he touches on briefly in "Fate is the Hunter" and "A Hostage to Fortune" which is an autobiography of his truly amazing life.

A reality experience
Gann's ability to describe personalities, geography and feelings bring to the reader a true "reality experience'. If you have never flown the descriptions alone would bring you into the realm of flight as real as you could imagine. If you have flown the day to day operations then you will undoubtedly relate what he writes about to some of your own experiences.

Don't read if flying makes you nervous
Every airline pilot should read this book about the things pilots had to deal with during the early period of commercial aviation. Airline passengers may not want to read about how easily things could go wrong.
