American Association for State and Local History Book Series. First Edition Thus , Sixth Printing . Paperback: Pictorial Wraps. This guide is a great reference point for all the things I assume museum professionals learn in college, but that volunteer exhibit groups are often left to figure out on their own through trial and error-recommended distances and heights for benches, exhibit displays, signage, walkways, etc., how pick font sizes and styles for signage, and what the ideal length and content is for interpretive information. There are guidelines on how to build your own exhibit displays and all kinds of other useful instructions. Simple and straight-forward, the book covers a number of critical but not necessarily obvious points in exhibit creation: -where to start; organizing exhibit plans, including several planning styles and creation of scale models; building your own display cases (includes directions and schematics for multiple styles); selecting and installing effective, appropriate lighting; how to adapt various spaces to your needs (historical houses, wide open warehouse space, etc. ); in-depth information on functional, realistic labeling/ captioning; where and why to plan in seating, railings, etc. and how to determine what size they should be. This is definitely a useful resource for any small museum! Every small museum should have a copy for reference.
