A most amazing collection of artfully photographed skeletons and skulls! All five vertebrate classes are well-represented, from coelacanth to hominids; and a few invertebrates are also included. The skeletons are complete and the preparations not only impeccable but creatively arranged. One sees a human riding a horse, a leopard leaping onto an antelope, birds and bats in flight, a gannet in it's plunge into the ocean. A frontal photograph of a hyena's skull resembles nothing less than a frightful Gargoyle, and one can just imagine the huge muscles that allow this canine to break the biggest bones. A similar image of a monkey skull is a Darwinian surprise. In addition to the artful arrangement of bones without wires or supports, the photography is exquisite. The lighting is superb and the timeless black and white images add great depth to the subject matter. For anyone interested in detailed anatomy, especially as that might relate to representing animals in artwork, this book is a must. And those who simply enjoy the grace and complexity of animals large and small will also enjoy perusing this visually sumptuous volume.
