This is a collection of four short stories. Each is touching, charming, and utterly true. While all have merit, the later two -- one about theater people, and the other with a man who strikes out to recover his own decency -- will stay with readers for years. Sadly, this seems to be Brooks's high-water mark; other books by him are few and do not reach the perfection of these stories. I lucked upon this obscure little book back in the '80s and have been giving copies to friends for years.( And if you can, try to find a copy with the striking paper cover.)
