As New in As New jacket. Octavo. 282pgs. Burgundy cloth, gilt lettering on spine. As new in as new jacket. The story of the Union army's ill-fated Red River Campaign and its disastrous defeat at Mansfield, Dark and Bloody Ground chronicles one of the strangest and most ignoble defeats suffered by the Union forces.
Mr Ayres uses a special talent of taking the reader through the events of a mostly forgotten and often ignored Red River Campaign. Beginning before the war, he takes the reader through a series of battles and skirmishes which were the most severe fought west of the Mississippi. The book gives concise biographies of familiar CW names as well as several lesser participants whose effect on the outcome was just as important. Politics, personal gain, bad/good military strategy, glory, bravado, luck, greed, and the lives which are affected by war have been brought together in Mr Ayres history of this "minor" backwater conflict.
