If you've learned crochet the traditional way and you feel trapped within a box. A box that has you counting stitches, but not really allowing your creativity to shine through and you, being a beginner, need validation that it's okay to color (or crochet) outside of the lines, this it the book for you. Ms. Polk elaborates on the items she makes and shows them off with great pictures on her sister and friends. Her crochet, as quoted from her mother are textile art, that could be hung on the wall.
After picking up and reading Ms. Polk's book from my local library, I knew I needed my own copy and FatCity Books, luckily had a copy, in great condition, I could put my hands on. Ms. Polk's book opened a whole new way of crocheting for me. I do see the reason for counting stitches now, (for you purist) but it has also opened me up creatively as well, allowing me to make up my own patterns. Plus measuring can work, just as well, too.
Ms. Polk's Crochet Squared includes, of course, basic hand coordination of Crochet 101, plus making a corner, using novelty yarns, threads, and ribbon, working with beads, paillettes (large sequins), along with tassles, both plain, and decorative.
It's a great book, which is both fun to look through and daydream about your own projects and to make hers.
