Chersonesos was a stunning city in the ancient world, a Greek colony of the 5th century, a Roman port and imperial base and a Byzantine metropolis bedecked with fine buildings and monuments. Yet, it has also been a well kept secret due to its proximity to the centre for Russias Black Sea fleet which has, until now, kept visitors and scholars away.
