An ink inscription to a former owner "the gift of her father" dated April 1860 on the half title page. This is the first book and only book of poetry by the naval architect Edward James Reed. Reed travelled to Russia and Japan in the 1880, and did much to help the Japanese design the warships that were later to triumph over the Russians in the Russo-Japanesese War. He wrote a book on Iron-clad warships in 1869, summarizing the developments of the American Civil War on iron-clad warship design; and wrote a book in 1902 on the future of the submarine as a ship of war.
