Clara Louise Maass (1876-1901) was an American nurse who died as a result of volunteering for medical experiments to study yellow fever. The first half of the book traces the life of Maass and the second half deals with the history of the old Newark German Hospital, where Maass served as head nurse. The hospital (still in existence) was later renamed in her honor.
