This volume for young readers contains the forgotten history of Bret Harte and how he was mistreated by vigilantes in Arcata, California. Today, the town square holds a proud statue of President McKinley while nearby unincorporated area, McKinleyville, has none, though their population now exceeds Arcata's. The only honorable thing to do is to bequeath the statue to its rightful home, Mckinleyville, hoping they will find a town square to receive it. Arcata must then commission an artist to depict the image of Bret Harte as shown here in this fascinating yet humbling account of the writer's legacy. Arcata might also consider some sort of reconciliation with her Native American and Chinese citizens who suffered similarly.
