23-year-old collegiate Jim Brower of Laurel Ridge, New Jersey, has been lured off campus and into the light--he's been sucked into the Light of the World, a cult led by "Father Adam." His college-sophomore sister Gail is determined to retrieve him; his absence has taken a great toll on their family. Aided--if paternistically and chauvinistically--by Jim's best friend Doug, who has also become Gail's boyfriend, Gail infiltrates the L.O.W. and sees good and bad things. She meets a mother who had come to get her daughter out and remained there herself even after her daughter left, and experiences both sides of a "deprogramming"--though not Jim's, not yet. Can she even get him away from L.O.W. headquarters for a short visit home?
BLINDED was published in 1978, with an excerpt appearing in February 1979's SCHOLASTIC Magazine. I think I read it AFTER I'd read THE LOVE BOMBERS, Gloria D. Miklowitz's 1980 take on cults that trawl campuses for members. The two are very similar, but BLINDED is scarier indeed. If your edition's cover announces "The Terrifying Novel by Robin F. Brancato," believe it and brace yourself.
Unfortunately, BLINDED is marred by typos. I think it was just how "Bantam Books Inc." was rolling at the time, because Sandra Scoppettone's THE LATE GREAT ME was similarly flawed.
While searching for this book to write this review, I discovered another BLINDED BY THE LIGHT, also about a teen's experience with a cult! It's more recent (2003, I think), authored by a Sherry Ashworth, and takes place in the UK. I'll probably be investigating further.
