The detailed illustrations that follow of which 132 are in color were made by Mr. Shigezo Kobayashi, famous as an artist of birds. All birds common in Europe and America are excluded, as it is easy for visitors to recognize these a t a glance. Also, birds rare in Japan and usually not seen by visitors are eliminated. However, a complete list of Japanese birds is included with the ornithological and common English and Japanese names as well as information on recognition, range of habitat and habit.
