Both volumes very good clean & sound condition / published without dust jackets. Reprint of the 1933 edition. 2vs., 1411pp. (paginated continuously)., plus 69pp. (table methodique), index. Text in French.
Very Good. B003OZ6Y2Q 1933 first edition, Librairie Rene Colas (Paris), finely bound, two 6 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches tall hardbound volumes, later gilt ruled marbled paper over red leather spines and tips, five raised bands and gilt lettering to spines, top page edges gilt, original paper wrappers bound in, viii, 784 (columns); (iv), 785-1412 (columns), 69, iii, pp. Very slight rubbing and edgewear to covers, with a 1/8-inch closed tear to lower edge of rear pastedown of the first volume. Gilt bookplate of renowned book collector Julia Parker Wightman to front pastedown of both volumes. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy of this limited edition (copy 953 of 1, 000), still one of the most useful bibliographies of books on costume with over 3000 entries. Number of plates, pagination and long annotations accompany the descriptions of each book. Note that this is a heavy and oversized set of books, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. Provenance: The prior owner, Julia Parker Wightman (1909-1994), was one of the first women elected, in 1977, to membership in the Grolier Club of New York, the oldest and arguably most esteemed existing bibliophilic club in North America. In his letter of nomination, Charles Tyskamp, then director of the Pierpont Morgan Library, noted that 'she has built two distinguished collections of bindings of all western countries and of all periods; one is her own, the other is at the Pierpon Morgan. ' She was a member of the distinguished club of women collectors, The Hroswitha Club, joining in 1955 and serving as its president from 1978 to 1994. It is likely Ms. Wightman's tiny pencil notation on the upper tip of the blank front free-endpaper of Volume 1 which appears to indicate that the set was sent to the bindery in 1947.
