(BECHER, BERND & HILLA). Celant, Germano & Sebastian Adler. BERND AND HILLA BECHER. La Jolla, CA: La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, 1974. First Edition. Small Square 4to. Stapled Pictorial Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Near Fine. np (40pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Frye & Smith, Ltd. Published in conjunction with a 1974 La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition, this is the austerely designed catalogue that accompanied the first American retrospective of photographic work of architectural typologies by the pioneering German husband and wife collaborators Bernd and Hilla Becher. A handsome example (entry No. 31 in the "ephemera et catalogues" bibliography of Antoine de Beaupre and Jean-Christophe Blaser's "Bernd und Hilla Becher: Printed Matter 1964/2013") showing just a bit of light overall wear and handling. LC 74-76639 Inventory Number: 020116.
First edition. Softcover. 64 pages. Catalog for a show held at XLIV. Esposizione Internationale D'Arte, La Biennale di Venezia May 27 through September, 1990; Kölnischer Kunstverein, 4. November 4 through December 23, 1990; Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University, Cambridge, February 7 through March 17, 1991; and Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, Cleveland, Ohio, April 12 through May 31, 1991. Text in English, German, and Italian with a preface by Klaus Bussmann. Includes numerous black and white images. A clean and tight near fine copy in wrappers.
Reader copy; Collectible. Large format softcover exhibition catalogue. Signed by Hilla Becher on the half-title page. Some age-toning to edges of covers, as usual for this paperback. A few signs of light wear to corners and edges. A few pages damp-rippled at lower corner, and some tidemarking from an apparent spill affecting the lower edge of binding. This is present, but is not distracting, and does not affect the images on the plates. Signed by the photographer when the exhibition was mounted in Cleveland.
