Frank Miller is responsible for some of my favorite superhero comics (Elektra: Assassin, Elektra Lives Again and Batman: Year One just to name a few). Unfortunately The Dark Knight Returns doesn't come close to reaching the quality of those classics. Miller's art style is as good as it usually was during this era but I find the depiction of Batman uncharacteristic of how he was before this came out. He's less of a detective and more of a brawling maniac/borderline fascist. I'm also not sure what the deal is with Miller's weird tendency to turn existing female characters into prostitutes and drug addicts (Selina Kyle, Karen Page). If you're in search for the definitive Batman tale I suggest you look elsewhere.
