Rebound ca. 1890 by Tout in handsome half dark green morocco backed marbled boards, raised bands, gilt titles and gilt decorated compartments including gilt clover emblems, gilt top edge, marbled endpapers, 364 pp., illustrated including a frontispiece, clean unmarked text, Very Good copy, bookplate (of John Monks) on front pastedown, age-toning or discoloration to the pages and page-edges, minimal rubbing to the outer joints and corners, light wear to the spine-ends.
Illustrated by George Cruikshank. Fine with no dust jacket. Magnificently bound in full burgundy leather by Joseph Zaehnsdorf, spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering in two compartments, gilt borders in remainder, double gilt borders on covers, intricate gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. Illustrated with ten full-page B&W drawings by George Cruikshank. Charles James Lever (1806-1872) was an Irish physician and novelist. His literary circle included William Hamilton Maxwell, Anthony Trollope, William Makepeace Thackeray, Charles Dickens, and many other well-known writers of the time.
