A report ("This is not a work of fiction." p.303) of a 1860 trip to South Carolina with nice descriptions of the complicated relationships between master and slave, an advanced (for the time) appreciation of the slaves' lot and their understanding of their prevailing political situation, relationship between cavalier and yeoman small planter, yankee, abolitionist, and southerner, and some nice depiction of stump speech politics between southern secessionists and southern anti-secessionists at a backwoods (revival style) barbacue, muster for Fort Sumter, not to mention accurate descriptions of the lifestyles of the era's diverse population. PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL EMBOSSED BROWN MUSLIN CLOTH COVERED BOARDS WITH GILT SPINE TITLES AND LIGHT BLUE COATED ENDPAPERS. BOOK IS WORN AT THE SPINE ENDS AND CORNERS WIT H THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER EXCISED, SOME STAINING AND SOILING OF THE TEXT BUT STILL IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.

Book is bumped and chipped at the fore-corners, cloth is chipped across the head and foot of the spine. The first 30 and last 40 pages of the book show tide lines, one signature at the center of the book is shaken.
