Although he served with distinction and ranked seventh in seniority among Washington's general officers at the end of the war, he has been largely forgotten by history. A native of North Carolina, he was a political leader in that colony and, with the outbreak of the war, was appointed colonel of the Second North Caolina Regiment. He eventually became commanding general of the Southern Department and the highest ranking officer from states south of Virginia.
